Populus Vult Decipi: People Want To Be Deceived
-Old Roman Saying

Lesson 1

lectureMAGICIANS DO NOT BELIEVE IN MAGIC. - Magical spectators do! The magician is a benevolent con man specializing in deception by means of gimmicks, ruses, stratagems and fakes. The magical spectator is a completely normal person who can temporarily leave his real world problems behind to wonder at the amazing sights that appear before his very eyes. (This begs the question of a definition for a magic show. - A swindler duping a willing victim?)

REMEMBER:
  • A magician without a spectator is just practicing, NOT practising, magic.
  • If the spectator is NOT thoroughly entertained, the magician has failed.
  • The spectator (the customer) is always right, NOT the magician.
  • Although a spectator can become a magician, a magician CANNOT become a spectator. - A magician cannot unlearn the secrets.
  • A magician has to lie. The bigger the liar the better the magician. Spectators have the option of telling the truth.
  • Magical spectating does not cause brain damage - but you have to be crazy to want to do it in the first place.
THEORY: (The going gets heavy now !)

Showing our appreciation by applauding a performance is a learned reaction. We do not usually clap or boo when sitting alone in front of a TV. When responding, in the company of others, we tend to follow the actions of those around us. This has been taken advantage of, in the past, by the use of the claque or paid audience.

The traditional reaction of audiences is often suspended when watching magician's acts. This is because spectators are often so baffled and amazed, at what they have seen, they forget to applaud. When this happens neither the person hiring the magician, nor the wonder-worker himself, know if the act has accomplished its paid objective.

This is where the Professional Magical Spectator comes to the rescue. As well as audibly gasping at all the appropriate points, he or she initiates the applause in the traditional manner.

As you can see, having a Professional Magical Spectator in the audience is a tremendous asset to any working magician. So, don't forget to wear your A.I.M.S. badge or the magus will not be able to distinguish you from an amateur spectator.
